Slovenia Digital Nomad Visa Requirements
In order to apply for the Slovenia digital nomad visa you need to meet certain requirements:
- Remote work: provide proof of working remotely for a non-Slovenian employer or client.
- Financial means: stable income of at least twice the average Slovenian income (around €19.000 x 2 = €38.000 for 2025).
- Health insurance: possess valid health insurance covering you in Slovenia.
- Criminal record: clean criminal record from your country of residence.
- Non-EU/EEA citizen: be a citizen of a third country and have a passport that’s valid for the full duration of your planned stay.

First, check if you meet the visa requirements of the Slovenia digital nomad visa.
Hereby a reminder of the criteria:
- Work remotely for a non-Slovenian business
- Have a minimum income of €38.000 per year
- Valid health insurance
- Clean criminal record
- Citizen from a non-EU/EEA country with a valid passport
If you don’t meet these requirements, you can save yourself the hassle of applying as your application won’t be succesful.
Gather Documentation
In order to proof that you meet the eligiblity criteria you will have to gather the necessary documents:
- Copy of your passport
- Clean criminal record certificate from your home country
- Health insurance policy confirming your coverage in Slovenia for the duration of your stay
- Employee contract confirming you work remotely for a foreign business or contracts with foreign clients as a self-employed individual
- Pay slips and/or bank statements confirming you meet the minimum income requirement
- Proof of accommodation in Slovenia
- Complete the application form which you can obtain directly from the authorities (see below)
File Application Slovenia Digital Nomad Visa
After ensuring you meet the requirements and gathering the necessary documentation to prove it, you can now hand in your application.
You can file your application in two ways, depending on whether you are already in Slovenia or not:
- Slovenia: file your application with any of the administrative units throughout the country.
- Abroad: via Slovenian consular posts or diplomatic representations.
Always make sure to contact the respective authority upfront in order to check if you need to make an appointment or if you can just show up.
Moreover, in the future there would be the possiblity to file your application through an online portal but this option is not available for the time being.
Validity, Renewals and Limitations of the Digital Nomad Visa in Slovenia
The Slovenia digital nomad visa is valid for one year and is not renewable.
Nevertheless, you can reapply for a new visa after a waiting period of six months abroad.
Therefore, the digital nomad visa in Slovenia is only a temporary residence permit for digital nomads and doesn’t allow you to convert it to permanent residency or citizenship.
If you want to stay longer than one year in Slovenia, you’ll have to apply for another type of visa during your stay in the country.
However, the Slovenian DNV does allows you to add family members like a spouse or dependents via family reunification. Your family members are also not allowed to work for a local business just like yourself.
Costs and Timeline for the Visa Application
As you can apply from different places, the exact costs will depend on the location you file your application. Yet, you have to budget for total fees of €100-150.
The exact timeline for receiving the visa will depend on the workload of the Slovenian administration and whether or not your application needs any additional clarification.
Yet, you can expect to receive your visa within 30 to 60 days.
Tax Considerations for Digital Nomads in Slovenia
You qualify as a Slovenian tax resident if you meet one fo the following criteria:
- Spend 183 days in the country throughout the calendar year
- Have your center of personal and economic ties in Slovenia
If you apply for the digital nomad visa which is valid for 12 months, it’s likely you spend sufficient time in the country to meet the first criterium.
Furthermore, in some cases you could also meet the second criterium.
Therefore, you could end up qualifying as a Slovenian tax resident according to the local tax laws.
Given that the digital nomad visa was only released in November 2025, it’s currently unclear if the tax authorities also plan to tax foreign digital nomads on the DNV.
If that happens, a possible way out could be to invoke the double tax treaty between Slovenia and your home country.

Slovenia is probably not your typical destination. Yet, by introducing the digital nomad visa, it tries to persuade more nomads to explore the country.

Let’s now have a look at some Frequently Asked Questions about the Slovenia digital nomad visa.
Is Slovenia in the Schengen Area?
Slovenia is part of the Schengen Area.
Therefore, once you have your Slovenia digital nomad visa you can easily travel throughout the whole Schengen Zone without any border checks.
Nevertheless, please note that you still have to limit your time in all the other Schengen countries combined to 90 days every 180 as the DNV doesn’t allow you to settle in those countries.
Can I Bring My Family?
You can bring your family via the immediate family reunification procedure.
Your spouse or dependents can join you in Slovenia and will get a residency permit with the same validity of the DNV of the applicant.
Nevertheless, don’t forget that just like the DNV applicant him-/herself, the family members are not allowed to work for a local business or clients.
Can I Reapply after the Visa Expires?
You can reapply after the visa expires but there is a waiting period of 6 months.
Accordingly, you can stay in Slovenia for a maximum of 12 months. After that you need to leave the country for at least 6 months before you can put in a new application.
Does this Visa Make Me a Tax Resident?
The Slovenian digital nomad visa can make you a Slovenian tax resident. Whether or not this will be the case will depend on your situation.
If you spend more than 183 days in Slovenia, you qualify as a Slovenian tax resident. Yet, if you still qualify as a tax resident of your home country, you could use the double treaty between the two countries to avoid tax residency in Slovenia.
